The Monthly Letter from Pastor Wanda – March 2014
The Psalmist has written; “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me” (Psalm 51: 10). This verse will resonate with our souls throughout our Lenten journey. The season of Lent provides a marvelous time for us to examine our choices and priorities. It affords us the chance to slow down a bit and reflect on what makes our lives most meaningful. Lent urges us to take a closer look at our relationship with God and with other people. It asks us to set aside special times for worship, prayer, reflection and meditation.
Lent originated in the very earliest days of the church. It was a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves and when converts were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism.
Lent is a season of soul – searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and spiritual contemplation. It is a time for each Christian to focus on his or her individual relationship with God. It is a very appropriate season to engage in the discipline of intensified self – examination repentance & renewal. While these practices are part of regular Christian life year-round, we give them special attention during Lent. Christians are encouraged to engage in this daily practice of taking inventory of our lives and resolving prayerfully to grow spiritually.
Lent moves us beyond ourselves into the light of Jesus Christ, Son of God. It is a special time for us to open ourselves to the renewing power of our Christian faith.
This year we are once again invited to participate in a variety of worship and study experiences in order to deepen our spiritual lives. Please make every effort to attend these thought provoking, inspiring and meaningful events. Please invite a friend, relative or neighbor to accompany you.
Our Ash Wednesday service will be held on March 5th at 7:30 p.m. This service is very inspirational and moving. We are reminded once more that we are loved, we are accepted and we are forgiven.
This year we are participating with our sister Presbyterian Churches from Massapequa, Baldwin, Malverne, Freeport, Sweet Hollow, Levittown and Glen Cove for a joint Lenten Bible Study and worship experience. We will meet together on Tuesday evenings at 6:45 p.m. for a light supper. Each evening we will share the Lord’s Supper together. It will be a moving and meaningful experience. Please let me know if you need a ride.
The below passage is from Journeying to Jerusalem – by Gay Williams
”Lent – an invitation to reflect, to reconsider, to slow down, to discover. Invited by Jesus to join him on the journey. Invited to humble ourselves. Sometimes on the dusty road I feel lonely, and am fearful. What lies ahead? Will I be able to withstand the challenges? Will I be enough? Will I respond with joy to the blessings to be realized? We are called forth out of the winter of ourselves to re-imagine our relationship with God. On Ash Wednesday we were marked-tagged as Christ’s own; humbled now, readied to be exalted as we draw closer to that place called Jerusalem. As the birds awaken in spring, the bulbs and the buds break forth and the animals stir, so too we are roused. We enter the city triumphantly having discovered that we are whole, loved, prefect, now and always.”
Blessings and Peace,
