February is a time when we consider Love, Hearts, Candy and Flowers as well as dedicated reminders about Women’s heart issues.  However, during this month of February, let us also remember the One who loved us first and who is always present for us unconditionally.  Perhaps we can dedicate a Valentine to Him through random acts of kindness toward our fellow man or by setting some extra time aside for spiritual activities including committing to the Lenten Series which begins February 24th at our Garden City Presbyterian Church. Happy Valentine’s Everyone!

Monthly Letter from Pastor Wanda - February 2015

Dear Friends,

I know I am most likely in the minority, but I love snow. I woke up at three in the morning and looked out the window and marveled at the blanket of snow covering the backyard and the snow laced trees glistening in the moonlight. I jumped for joy with Matthew when we heard the news that school was cancelled and it was declared a ‘snow day’.

I got up early, out of habit and made my way to the kitchen. I put a pot roast in the crock pot and a crumb cake in the oven and sat down at the table for an extended devotional time. It was refreshing not to have to watch the clock and rush through the readings. It gave me time to pray and meditate upon the word. I am thankful that the snow day provided the chance for me to slow down the pace of my life, so that I could reflect on the things that are most important.

The season of Lent also provides a time in the mid-winter, to slow down. The forty days of Lent provides us with an opportunity to examine who we are and whom we claim as our God. One cannot help but think that during his forty days in the wilderness, Jesus used that time for prayer, self-reflection, and contemplation. Perhaps within the period of time he found the strength and courage to commit himself fully to his calling in his earthly life.

Lent can be a time for us to look within, examine our lives and reflect upon how we can be more faithful disciples. I urge you to make space for grace during this 40 day journey.

I encourage you to participate in our special Lenten activities. Please join us for our Ash Wednesday Service on February 18th at 7:30pm. It is a powerful and inspiring time when we stand authentically before God and one another and confess that we do not have it all together, that we cannot achieve perfection no matter how hard we try. We remind ourselves on Ash Wednesday that we are not immortal. The honesty of this service opens up some space for us to breathe. It proclaims that even while we make mistakes, we are simultaneously valued, loved, accepted and forgiven by Almighty God.

I also encourage you to be a part of the Lenten Study Series.  This year we are studying the Book of James. We are partnering with the West End Presbyterian Cluster for these times of learning, sharing & growing together. We will host the first gathering on Tuesday, February 24th from 6:45-8:30 pm. I know that you will be inspired and challenged by this study.

Please make every effort to attend our Sunday Worship services so that you will have strength for the journey. We will continue to have our Potluck Luncheon on the first Sunday of every month. Please bring a dish to share. You might also want to invite a friend to join us for worship and lunch. May you experience the fullness of God’s love now and always.

Blessings & Peace,

Pastor Wanda

Sanctuary Flowers

This year there will be 3 options for obtaining flowers for the sanctuary.  The first option is the traditional ordering from the florist at a cost of $35.00. The second option will be to purchase your own bouquet and you can then divide the bouquet in half for each flower container.  The last option will be for you to purchase two artificial bouquets at any craft store and if you would like the flowers can then be held at the church for future Sundays. If you have any questions please call the church office at 516-354-1848.
