The Monthly Letter from Pastor Wanda -  December 2014

Dear Friends,

As we gather around our table for the evening meal, we usually join hands and say a prayer of blessing. Sometimes we recite the one that I learned as a child, “Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest, let this food to us be blest. Amen!” Recently when we finished the first line of the prayer, Matthew burst out in the song ‘Be Our Guest, Be Our Guest, put our service to the test…’ The Middle School is presenting the musical ‘Beauty & the Beast’ in the Spring, and Matthew had to memorize this song for his audition. Believe it or not it is a fitting prayer for the season of Advent; “Come Lord Jesus, Be Our Guest – put our service to the test….”

Advent (from the Latin word adventus, meaning ‘coming’ or to come) is considered to be the beginning of the Church year for most churches in the Western tradition. The season is a time period filled with anticipation and hope, although at its beginnings the emphasis was much more on penitence, fasting and sin. It is not just a celebration of a moment in time when a baby was born, but also looks beyond to a time when the Bible tells us that Jesus will come again, not as a weak and vulnerable baby but in power with authority.  The traditional scripture readings for this time emphasis both the First and Second coming of Jesus Christ, and our accountability for  faithfulness at His coming, judgment on sin and the hope of eternal life.

Advent is a spiritual journey through the truths of scripture that point to the birth of the Messiah, to a reaffirmation that He has come, is present in the world today and will come again in glory. It mirrors the journey of faith we as believers make after that moment of acceptance of Jesus as the King of Kings, Lord of Lords, Prince of Peace and Savior of our lives. The first steps of faith commitment become a journey on the road of faith as our understanding of the ways of the Lord increase and we look forward to our final destination, which is to be in His presence forever.

We hope that you will join the Advent journey as we focus on the themes of Hope, Peace, Joy and Love in the next four weeks of worship. Plan now to participate in the Christmas Eve Candlelight Services as we welcome the Lord of the Universe.

“Come Lord Jesus, Be Our Guest…. put our service to the test…”

A Christmas Blessing

May there be harmony in all your relationships.  May sharp words, envious thoughts, and hostile feelings be dissolved.

May you give and receive love generously.  May this love echo in your heart like the joy of church bells on a clear December day.

May each person who comes into your life be greeted as another Christ.  May the honor given the Babe of Bethlehem be that which you extend to every guest who enters your presence.

May the hope of this sacred season settle in your soul.  May it be a foundation of courage for you when times of distress occupy your inner land.

May the wonder and awe that fills the eyes of children be awakened within you.

May it lead you to renewed awareness and appreciation of whatever you too easily take for granted

May the bonds of love for one another be strengthened as you gather with your family and friends around the table of festivity and nourishment.

May you daily open the gift of your life and be grateful for the hidden treasures it contains.

May the coming year be one of good health for you.  May you have energy and vitality.  May you care well for your body, mind, and spirit.

May you keep your eye on the Star within you and trust this Luminescent Presence to guide and direct you every day.

May you go often to the Bethlehem of your heart and visit the One who offers you peace.  May you bring this peace into our world.

Sanctuary Flowers

This year there will be 3 options for obtaining flowers for the sanctuary.  The first option is the traditional ordering from the florist at a cost of $35.00. The second option will be to purchase your own bouquet and you can then divide the bouquet in half for each flower container.  The last option will be for you to purchase two artificial bouquets at any craft store and if you would like the flowers can then be held at the church for future Sundays. If you have any questions please call the church office at 516-354-1848.
